How Five Minutes Changed A Three-Hour Bedtime War
Hey there…
For a while there, when my granddaughter was a toddler, bedtime in our house wasn’t a routine. It was a hostage negotiation. Three hours, sometimes more — tantrums, climbing out of bed, getting into things she had no business getting into, the whole household running on fumes waiting for her to finally, FINALLY go down.
I was already knee-deep researching supplements — for myself, if I’m honest, trying to sort through my own mess — and when I started searching for help for my granddaughter, melatonin kept showing up. Figured, what’s the harm in looking into it.
After hours of research, I bought the children’s version. Followed the dosage on the bottle exactly. Put her to bed like normal, and waited for the usual chaos. 0
She was out in five minutes. Maybe ten.
There was silence. Actual silence. And instead of celebrating, the first question was, “wait, is she breathing?” and suddenly we’re all hovering over a sleeping toddler like we’d done something wrong. Checked the bottle again. Checked the dosage again. She was completely fine. Just asleep. At a normal bedtime. Like a normal kid.
It took us two or three nights before any of us actually believed it wasn’t a fluke. It wasn’t. That one small thing didn’t just fix her sleep — it fixed the whole house’s sleep. Nobody tells you that when your kid can’t settle down, neither can anybody else under that roof.
That whole experience sat in the back of my head for a while. Because a few months later, I’m sitting at a table chatting with my best friend, and she said something about wishing she could fall asleep as fast as her husband does…
And that turned into a whole different story. One that involves me, a truck, and a lot more research than I expected.
(Part two, next Wacky Wednesday.)
Hey thanks for stopping by and checking us out… we appreciate it… Later!!
