AI Gave Us A Superpower. Don’t Let It Make You Stupid.

I’m going to say something that might surprise you coming from someone who talks about AI constantly…

Don’t let it think for you.

I use AI every single day. And I am telling you with complete sincerity… Not everything it tells you is true.

I’m GenX. We didn’t have smartphones. We didn’t have GPS. We didn’t have Google.

When I started driving truck we used maps. Physical maps. A big fat Atlas with every state in the country.

You had to sit down and actually LOOK at where you were going. Figure out the route. Write down the turns. Think through what you’d do if something went wrong.

Then GPS showed up and it was genuinely amazing.

And people stopped learning how to navigate.

My son was at the doctor’s office recently and a woman came running up to him in a complete panic. Her GPS was acting up and she was trying to get to the MVD office. She had no idea which direction to go.

And I thought about the irony of calling a gas station for help… Because the guy behind the counter probably can’t give you directions anymore either. Because he uses GPS too.

We traded the skill for the convenience. And most of us didn’t notice until the convenience stopped working.

Then Google showed up. Then people started just reading the first result without questioning whether it was accurate.

Then AI showed up and now people are typing questions and accepting the answer as fact.

Well I asked AI and it said…

That’s the new well I read it on the internet so it must be true…

I love Claude. I genuinely do. It has changed what I’m able to do and how fast I can do it.

And I would not bet my life on everything it tells me being one hundred percent accurate.

Because it’s not. And it knows it’s not. And sometimes it doesn’t know what it doesn’t know. Which is the most dangerous kind of wrong there is.

If an enemy takes down our power grid… If an earthquake hits… AI is worthless. Not unhelpful. Completely. Worthless.

Every shortcut you took instead of actually learning something is gone. And all you have left is what’s actually in your head.

Use AI to find information faster… then verify what matters.

Use AI to organize your thinking… then apply your own judgment.

Use AI to draft things… then read them critically before you send them.

Ask yourself when something feels off… even if the AI sounds completely certain…

Because certain isn’t the same as correct…

Keep your map reading skills. Keep your ability to ask a stranger for directions. Keep your critical thinking even when Google makes it feel unnecessary.

Because technology can be taken away from you in about thirty seconds by the right storm or the right enemy or the right power outage…

But nobody can take away what you actually know…

Don’t trade that for convenience… No matter how good the convenience gets…
