From A Bowl Of Pills To A Handful — How AI Talked Me Down

Hey there…

Okay, so here’s a number that’s gonna sound made up but isn’t: at one point I had somewhere near a hundred supplement bottles in my house. Maybe more. I stopped counting because counting them was depressing.

It started innocent enough. Amazon reviews, the usual way — read what worked for people, order the thing, repeat. But then I’d hit Google trying to actually understand what I was taking, and that’s its own special kind of hell. You type in “what kind of magnesium,” and forty-seven articles show up, and you gotta go read enough of each one to figure out if it’s an actual doctor talking or somebody’s 2am blog post they threw together for ad revenue. By the time you find one source you trust, you’ve burned an hour and you still have six more supplements to research.

Then I started dumping all of it into ChatGPT at once instead. Here’s what I want, here’s what I’ve seen out there, find me credible sources, tell me the side effects, tell me what the actual research used for dosage. And it would come back with the answer AND a follow-up question I hadn’t even thought to ask. That right there is the part that got me — not that it was fast, but that it was thinking one step ahead of me.

Quick thing though, because I know some of you are already side-eyeing me for typing your health stuff into a chatbot — I get it, I did too. I’d been watching a bunch of videos before I ever did this, and the one thing that kept coming up over and over was: check your settings. Before you put anything personal in, find the toggle that controls whether your conversations get used to train the AI, and decide for yourself if you’re comfortable with that.

That’s part of why I ended up here on Claude instead of staying put — at the time, Gemini didn’t even give me that option to turn off. Might’ve changed since, I don’t know, but it mattered to me. Learn to use these tools, absolutely. Just do it with your eyes open, not blind faith.

Once I got comfortable with that, I went all in. Told it every diagnosis, every hereditary thing that runs in my family, every “this could turn into a problem someday” — and then started going bottle by bottle through everything I had at home. This one, does this do anything? Oh, that overlaps with the other one, you only need one. This dosage, is it even the right amount, or am I wasting money taking too little to matter?

And here’s the moment that hooked me: the second or third time it told me “hey, these two are doing the same job, you can drop one” — I was sold. One less pill. Then three less. Then eight less. I wasn’t trying to cut corners on my health, I want to be clear about that — I’m fighting hereditary stuff, I refuse to grow old gracefully… I’m aging like I’ve got something to prove.

But there’s a difference between “taking what you need” and “swallowing thirty-five pills because you’re scared to stop.” Some mornings I’d look at that pile and just… not eat. Because eating meant facing the pile. That’s not health, that’s dread with extra steps.

Months of back and forth later, breakfast went from “pills plus pills at lunch too” down to one bowl, one sitting, done. That’s the whole win right there. Not a miracle, not a hack. Just finally having something smart enough to say “you don’t need eight of these, you need three” — and being willing to actually listen when it did.

Hey thanks for stopping by and checking us out… we appreciate it… Later!!
